Why a locked phone pauses GPS
SpikeCamp runs in the browser today. Phones pause browser GPS when the screen locks or another app is in front. That is how iPhone and Android treat web apps, so it is expected, not a bug.
What SpikeCamp does about it:
- While you track, SpikeCamp holds the screen on. Dim it with the brightness slider; do not lock it.
- If SpikeCamp goes to the background, the Track screen warns you: SpikeCamp is in the background.
- Positions you missed are not invented. Command sees a gap, and sees you as dropped off if the gap is longer than the threshold.
What you can do:
- Keep the Track screen open and the phone unlocked, dimmed.
- Carry a Meshtastic radio bound to your callsign. The radio keeps beaconing with the phone locked. See Bind a Meshtastic radio.
Native Android and iOS apps, which can track with the screen off, are on the roadmap. Keep the radio plan either way.
